Public hearings on Maryland redistricting scheduled
By A Sun Staff Writer June 21, 2001 Marylanders will be able to express their views on legislative and congressional redistricting at a dozen public hearings starting next week. The Governor's Redistricting Advisory Committee will hold 12 public sessions around the state beginning Wednesday in Salisbury. Gov. Parris N. Glendening appointed the panel, headed by Secretary of State John T. Willis, to hear public testimony and present him with recommendations on how to carve Maryland into eight congressional and 47 legislative districts. Other members of the committee are Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, House Speaker Casper R. Taylor Jr., Montgomery County Councilman Isiah Leggett and Worcester County Commissioner Louise L. Gulyas. The committee's role is advisory. The governor will prepare the redistricting plans and present them to the General Assembly in its session beginning in January. Public meetings are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Locations have not been decided for some hearings. Information will be posted on the secretary of state's Web site, www.sos.state.md.us. - Wednesday: Salisbury, Wor-Wic Community College, Henson Hall, Room 105. - July 10: Wye Mills, Chesapeake College, Kent Humanities Building, Room H117. - July 24: Southern Maryland. - July 25: Frederick Community College, F300 Theater. - July 26: Cumberland, Allegany College of Maryland, College Center Theatre. - Aug. 22: Bel Air, Harford Community College. - Aug. 23: Columbia, Howard Community College, Smith Theater. - Aug. 28: Baltimore City Community College, Harbor Campus, Bard Building, Second Floor. - Aug. 29: Baltimore County. - Aug. 30: Arnold, Anne Arundel Community College, Auditorium. - Sept. 5: Prince George's County. - Sept. 6: Montgomery County.
