Taylor's Comments Humorous
To the Editor: I had to laugh when I read Mr. Cas Taylor’s comments in the Cumberland Times-News regarding the exoneration of his use of a state trooper to take his secretary to a campaign event in Flintstone a few weeks ago. Mr. Taylor indicated that he feared for his secretary’s safety at the Flintstone Meet the Candidates Night, sponsored by the Allegany County League of Women Voters. Having attended public meetings on a variety of issues with people from the eastern portion of Allegany County, I have never known them to do anything that could be considered threatening or even rowdy. In addition, I have never known the League of Women Voters to hold events at which brawls take place. The League would never tolerate such behavior. Needless to say, the people attending the event in Flintstone were polite and courteous. I suppose Mr. Taylor was surprised to learn that the people living in his district know how to conduct themselves. The final note of irony in his protestations regarding the investigation of his use of state personnel and resources came in his comment that the state Republican party wasted thousands of taxpayers dollars in asking for the investigation to begin with. If Mr. Taylor would like to investigate the waste of taxpayer dollars, perhaps he should take a look at his Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort. According to information on the resort released last spring by the state, Rocky Gap suffered losses totaling $16.5 million in just the last three years. The taxpayers of Allegany County are paying for Rocky Gap not only through state moneys used to prop it up, but also through an approximate $400,000 annual payment on its debt that now comes out of the county’s General Fund. If one were interested in stopping the waste of taxpayer dollars, the Rocky Gap project might be a good place to start. Sincerely, Kimi-Scott McGreevy Cumberland, MD 8/19/02 p.s.
